Calls For Tighter Controls Over Coal Seam Gas Mining in NSW

The group behind one of NSW first court challenges to coal seam gas mining says it is concerned about the impact on the region’s economy and environment.

The Environmental Defenders Office has filed a claim challenging the recent approval of AGL’s project for 110 wells between Barrington Tops and Great Lakes along with water and gas pipelines and treatment facilities, on behalf of the Barrington Gloucester Stroud Preservation Society.

Water pollution is a major concern and the issues will generally revolve around water quality, water dispersal, water pollution, the Gloucester Valley particularly at the north end is very complex geologically, it’s an absolute mass of faults and sheers which make all sorts of mining and gas mining very very hazardous, spokesperson Gary Smith said.

Mr Smith said that “Personally I prefer the gas development not to be here, I think it’s much too hazardous, but if it is to proceed we need to get it much more tightly controlled.”

My take on all business developments is that they must be able to prove that they are a sustainable business with good environmental management and do not harm neighbouring businesses and especially not food producing land.  I am not opposed to mining in principle but it must comply with these basic rules for every business.
