Comparing emissions around the world
Here is a list of both total emissions and also per capita (per head) emissions. In my opinion, it is the per person emissions that really matter although not everyone agrees.
CountryAnnual emissions Per person Promised cuts
CHINA 6.8 billion tonnes 5.5 tonnes 40 to 45%t by 2020, compared with 2005 levels
USA 6.4 billion tonnes 21.0 tonnes 3 % below 1990 by 2020, & 17% from 2005.
EUROPE 5.03 tonnes billion 10.2 tonnes 20% below 1990 & 30% if others follow
RUSSIA 1.7 billion tonnes 11.9 tonnes 22-25 % below 1990
INDIA 1.4 billion tonnes 1.2 tonnes 20-25% from 2005
JAPAN 1.4 billion tonnes 11.0 tonnes 25 % below 1990
CANADA 658 million tonnes 19.8 tonnes 20% below 2006 – or 3% below 1990
STH KOREA 664 million tonnes 13.7 tonnes 4 % c ut from 2005 levels
BRAZIL 440 million tonnes 2.2 tonnes 20% cut below 2005
AUSTRALIA 381 million 17.9 tonnes between 4 and 23% below 1990 levels by 2020
INDONESIA 380 million tonnes 1.6 tonnes 26% by 2020 below “business as usual” PLUS deforestation
When you take CO2 from deforestation into account, Indonesia is the world’s third largest emitter of greenhouse gases.
Greenhouse gas emissions are 2008 data from Germany’s Energy industry institute IWR except for the EU, which are from a 2007 submission to United Nations.
Australia, USA and Canada emit far more greenhouse emissions per head than the rest of the world and it is hard for others to cut their emissions while we waste
