Green Power for South Australia

“South Australia is one of the windiest and sunniest places in Australia so it’s a prime target for renewable energy investors,” said Premier Mr Rann   The South Australian Government has set a target of having 33 per cent of the state’s power generation coming from renewable sources by 2020.  Mr Rann’s vision is to see a statewide green grid of renewable energy feeding into the national grid out of South Australia – in wind, solar, geothermal and wave.

He wants to be able to export green power to the eastern states and had announced a feasibility study to examine how best to increase South Australia’s electricity transmission capacity.

I would like to see us generating a lot more than 33% renewable power before we start exporting it but he is right about transmission.  So much energy is lost in the transmission.  A sensible energy management strategy would have large numbers of localised small renewable power generation to avoid the huge transmission losses.  Lots of small scale and domestic wind and solar plants would make a lot of sense.

One of my clients has an aquaculture farm on the coast of Victoria and they have huge power bills for keeping the sea water pumping around the farm.  I tis very windy and they want to get it wind powered.  The problem is that it is too big to be domestic and too small to be a commercial wind farm for they are not allowed to do it.  This is the sort of nonsense that needs to stop if we are to reduce our carbon footprint and have environmental sustainability
