Environmentally Sustainable Australian Aquaculture

I have worked with large sections of the fishing and aquaculture industries and I am very surprised by the continual attacks in the press by some so called “green” activists.

I have found the industry great to work with. The fish farmers fully understand the need for environmental sustainability and know perfectly well that you can’t grow the best quality fish in dirty water.  Many of them have fully integrated management systems with ISO 14001, ISO 9001, occupational health and safety and food safety or HACCP.

The best outcomes for business come when  all your  needs are in a single simple system and helping to do this and keep it simple is my specialty

The fish farms (fin fish, prawns and abalone)  I have worked with are very professional organisations who run a certified green business and deliver a great product.  They need to invest millions of dollars for many years before they are able to become profitable and often have additional costs associated with unnecessary court challenges by misinformed conservation groups.

It is a true pleasure to work with a business that is under threat caused by misconceptions and watch them grow to become world leaders in their industry as a result of implementing

There has been a $63 million increase in the value of Australian aquaculture.  And aquaculture does need to be part of the solution for world food security, especially with the pressures on wildcatch fisheries.  Aquaculture is about 40 per cent of the gross value of Australia’s fisheries production.

This also provides new opportunities for jobs – about one-third of people in the fishing industry are employed in aquaculture, including a rising number of indigenous workers

And I get wonderful comments like the following

  • “Jean Cannon is an asset to our industry. She has worked with both large and small Australian aquaculture operations to implement best practice systems.” Martin Hernen, South Australian Aquaculture Council
  • “I have found Jean’s performance outstanding. Single-handedly she has convinced the major tuna companies in Australia to adopt not just a training culture, but also to enter the difficult ISO path. Jean has shown a capacity for patience, and the ability to adapt the delivery to the complexities of each client”.  Brian Jeffriess  Chair Tuna Boat Owners Association, Deputy Chair Australian Fisheries Management Authority
  • “While the EMS was put in place to improve the future sales, other advantages have arisen as part of the process. It has laid down a formal structure to give workers a documented avenue for all ideas and concerns, and lead to improvements in many areas, including environmental. After the initial setup, the EMS it has proved itself as a worthwhile exercise for our business.”  Brad Mansell  South Australian Aquaculture Management
