The Year That Was
Australia started a new financial year on July 1st and it is time to change our thinking and go green to save money. Green business is about sensible energy management, waste management and good planning. It is simply good business sense to include environmental sustainability.
It is actually time we caught up. When the new government was voted in on a largely green cloud and rushed off to sign the Kyoto Protocol, green business slowed right down. Many business people waited to know what the government would require from them, the Prime Minister appeared on TV repeatedly telling us all how expensive and difficult it would be and numerous funding initiatives that supported green business were canceled.
Then October came and business pulled in its belt as we were told the economic problems would be long and difficult so everything that could be considered optional was canceled.
Going green became a supposedly expensive luxury in spite of the reality that going green saves money!
I was at a business breakfast last week and the round table discussion was about what we were all expecting from next year and how the downturn has affected us. The comments were in line with what I hear from clients as well. Marketing is down, magazines and newspapers are feeling the pinch, car sales are down and the type of cars people are driving is changing to smaller more economic ones. This will lead to carbon reductions. People are not planning long term. It was around 30% optimism, 50% steady as we go and 20% anxiety.
Going green will help your bottom line so why wait any longer? You can make big savings in your business by taking a systematic approach to having a green business and this is where I help.
