Some sense from COAG

Sorry if I sound cynical but is a relief to see that some sensible reforms and energy management were agreed on.

Inefficient hot water systems will be phased out and all appliances will be properly labelled under new national energy efficiency standards as part of a 10-year energy efficiency plan adopted by the Council of Australian Governments yesterday.  This is estimated to energy efficiency  by the same amount as the removal of 4.8 million cars from the roads.

From next year, all new homes and commercial buildings will have to meet energy rating standards.  And they will accelerate the phase-out of inefficient lighting, beginning with a ban on incandescent light globes to start in November.

Kevin Rudd was correct when he said that energy efficiency was the “low-hanging fruit” of greenhouse gas abatement, and this could provide savings equivalent to one-fifth (20%) of projected global energy-related emissions in 2030. Maybe we will eventually achieve some level of environmental sustainability
