The Ulimate Recycling
Monday, September 29th, 2008San Antonio, Texas, has unveiled a plan to harvest methane gas from human waste on a commercial scale and turn it into a clean fuel. According to Steve Clouse, COO of the city’s water system, “More than 90 percent of materials flushed down the toilets and sinks of San Antonio will be recycled.”
In reality waste to energy has been around for some time, and a few companies have already perfected the process. It just sounds more dramatic when human waste is involved. Last year a politician drove a car outside Parliament in Wellington, New Zealand fuelled on biodiesel made from algae growing on sewage ponds. As our population increases, so does out waste. What a resource!
Pity we can’t harvest hot air from the parliament houses around the world – although that is trivialising a serious issue.
With constantly improving technology, and a growing interest for using domestic energy, the use of waste to energy facilities is expected to grow another 173% in the next five years as the industry adds another 9,699 MW worth of capacity.
The following countries are expected to experience the highest annual growth rates regarding the use of waste-to-energy: Italy, 36%, Spain, 35.8%, Germany, 29.4%, France, 24.9% and Poland, 21.8%
